Glutathione is made up of three amino acids: glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. After its being produced and used by your body, it is then broken down by an enzyme called gamma-glutamyl transferase.

When you take a glutathione supplement, it needs to transfer through the liver before penetrating in to your bloodstream. The liver may contain a high level of gamma-glutamyl transferase, which will break down glutathione. Due to this reaction most oral forms of glutathione may not be the best solution for achieving the desired effects.

Boosting your glutathione levels is a great way to enhance your antioxidant and immune defense.  Glutathione may assist your body with detoxing and protecting your liver, brain, and heart.

Food

A variety of foods contain the building blocks for glutathione. These food groups may be a great addition to your regular diet.

  • Garlic, asparagus, and cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, brussels sprouts and similar green leafy vegetables. All belong to Cruciferous vegetables family. These veggies boost glutathione through their sulfur components.
  • Animal and dairy food sources.  These foods have a higher level in cysteine and methionine, thus capable of increasing glutathione levels. Calcium and riboflavin found in dairy, may increase glutathione levels.

Glutathione Side Effects & Safety

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, taking GSH supplement are not recommended.
  • The glutathione-boosting supplements may be over-stimulating your immune system. Check your response daily.
  • Flatulence
  • Loose stools
  • Flushing
  • Weight gain
  • Chest tightness, diarrhea, and fever (if taken in large dosages)
  • Lower sink levels
  • Asthma attacks (do not inhale if you have astma)
  • Lower zinc level
